Preaching through The Gospel of Mark by Shane Scott – Mark 3:20-35

5/25/08 – A House Divided Shane continues his lessons through the Book of Mark. This lesson covers Mark 3:20-35. Here’s Shane’s outline of the study:

Jesus and His Family (3:20-35)

·         Went out to seize him = Arrest (6:17)

·         Why?

§  Protect Jesus?

§  Protect Family Honor?

Jesus and the Scribes (3:22-30)

·         The accusation:  “Possessed by the Devil” (3:22, 30)

·         Later Jewish tradition made the same charge (b. Sanhedrin 43a)

·         Same said of John – Matt. 11:18

·         Jesus responds with two arguments:

§  This would mean Satan is against himself – (3:23-26)

§  This does mean that I am binding Satan (3:27)

·         Sober warning (3:28-30)

·         Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is attributing the work of the Spirit to Satan.

Jesus and His Family (3:31-35)

·         Jesus redefines who His family is: “Whoever does the will of God.”

Some Lessons for Us

1.       Jesus is either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord.

2.       All sins will be forgiven!

3.       Our real family is based in Christ.

5/18/08 – The Choosing of the Twelve – Shane continues his lessons through the Book of Mark. This lesson covers Mark 3:13-19 and the Choosing of the Twelve apostles. Here’s Shane’s outline of the study:

OT Background

• “Up on the Mountain” – 3:13
• “He appointed twelve” – 3:14

The Role of the Apostles

• “Whom he also named apostles” – 3:14
• “That they might be with him” – 3:14
• “Send them out to preach” – 3:14
• “And have authority to cast out demons” – 3:15

The Men Themselves

• Every list begins with Peter
• Possibly three sets of brothers
• All were apparently from Galilee (except Judas)
• Every list ends with Judas

Some Lessons for Us

• Christ can work through Imperfect people
• Christ can unite very different people
• Christ sees us as we are and as what we can be
